the valley house: design inspiration

the valley house: design inspiration

there's some exciting news over here for the simons'! i am so excited to finally share that we are officially building a new home in southwest edmonton!

so if you know anything at all about bradley and i, you'll know that we never wanted or thought a new build would be right for us, so... i'll share with you how we came to the decision. turns out that our one bedroom condo we thought would be "doable" for the next few years with little hendrik was absolutely not. living in a high rise with a 5 month old baby and little dog makes the simplest of tasks difficult and inconvenient. nevermind the fact that our tight space lacks storage and a yard. so, with that said, we knew it was time to go house hunting. originally, bradley and i were looking for an older home in a location by the river that we could renovate completely to our taste, but we quickly found out that this didn't fit our budget. a lot of the homes we viewed needed minimum 75 k towards renovations and that would already be topping out our budget. we would have to live in an ongoing renovation project and find a way to continually fund the high cost of renovating. so after feeling pretty defeated about the whole process, we thought, why don't we educate ourselves and see what kind of value comes with building a new home. so off we went to look at showhomes, and off the bat, we were impressed with the homes we were viewing; the value was definitely there and we were excited at the idea of building a home that we could customize. the only drawback was that we were finding the neighborhoods a little "cookie-cutter," and then we spotted keswick. we were blown away with the development. nestled in the southwest corner of edmonton, right along the north saskatchewan river, it was perfect and we fell in love! the developer really took the time to ensure no detail was missed. there are paths, trails, wetlands, all built on the beauty of the natural habitat. there was no question, we knew this was where we wanted to raise our family.

finding keswick was just the beginning of the process; we needed to find a builder that we felt confident in, and that's when we walked into a kimberley showhome. we were immediately impressed with the home, and even more so, the service. after walking through many showhomes, this was the first home we walked through where we were asked, what was important to us before any plans or prices were given to us. we felt like they truly cared about finding a home that suited our family. long story short, after a few weeks of designing our home and doing some customizations for the plan, we finally made it official! and so to get to the fun stuff for you my readers, i want to share some design inspiration! i'll be sharing all my designs for each room as we go so it'll be a fun series to follow along with! and then the final reveal when we move in, next year of course!
